An Overview of Educational Technology/Emerging Trends

The following statements reflect emerging trends in educational technology. These were originally compiled April, 2007. Please expand, add, or edit as you please.

1) Educational practice is becoming increasingly social. Blogs, wikis, podcasts, vodcasts, screencasts, groups, social networks, etc ... these are all symptomatic of a move toward social learning and personal connections. Teachers need to better understand such technologies as they can apply to learning.

2) Educational technologies make it much easier to both produce (e.g., create, program, simulate, invent) and critically consume information.

3) RSS and related technologies provide powerful ways to manage, redistribute, remix, mashup and repackage information.

4) The concepts of Digital Media Literacies and Digital Citizenship are becoming increasingly important for teachers, administrators and students alike.

5) New theories regarding learning should be considered or discovered, while older learning theories (e.g., social constructivism, connectionism, project-based learning, inquiry-based learning) are verified. Small pieces loosely joined and connectivism theories are excellent places to start.

6) Remixing educational media and tools will become and increasingly important skill.

7) Free and open will be important characteristics for educational software, content and publishing. The future is open; copyright, intellectual property and the ownership of knowledge will be challenged and recreated.

8) Issues related to the use of technology in the classroom will continue to be debated. Consensus will never be reached, but constructive arguments CAN be healthy.

9) Learning can happen anytime, anywhere and is becoming increasingly informal.

10) All of these conditions together create both a threat and a challenge to modern day systems of education.
